Also, Google has widened their search coverage and not only based on certain sources like Freebase and Wikipedia. Basically, the three main parts of search engines are the spiders, index, and the search interface and relevancy software.
Spiders work just like regular browsers, they request and read the pages from the web and store the links. The anchor text in these links can help in describing the page, it can also be used in discovering new documents for the next crawl. Spiders follow these links and if they are not yet indexed they are added into the search engine catalog or index. If they already been indexed they are being updated.
The search engine catalog or also called search engine index is where links, description and other contents of the websites are stored. Normally, when you use the search engine, you are just accessing the search engine index and not actually the web. That is why the information might somehow out of date.
The last part is the search interface and relevancy software. This software accepts and check the user’s input. If the software detected that there are misspelled words, it automatically recommends correct spelling variations. This software is also responsible in checking and gathering relevant pages and displaying the results. The results are ranked according to their content, link citation data and usage data.
